What is Coaching?

Coaching is a tool that is used to empower you and help you reach your goals.

During a coaching session I will ‘walk by your side’ to help you to reach your ultimate goal and aspirations. I will listen to you, ask questions, find out what your challenges are and inspire you to reach that end goal.

You will be encouraged to make decisions and take responsibility for these decisions.

What coaching is not

Coaching is not about me giving you suggestions or advice. In this respect it differs from mentoring or counselling.

What’s your style of coaching?

I am a calm yet challenging coach. I’ll help you talk through issues in a structured way, enabling you to ‘see the wood for the trees’ and reach conclusions and decide on actions with a clearer approach than you might manage on your own.

My coaching style combines a down-to-earth, matter-of-fact approach with an intuitive ability to uncover deeper truths. This enables you to gain significant insights into yourself that previously you may have been unaware of.

My optimistic outlook and belief in my clients helps you gain confidence in their own abilities; I am enthusiastic and supportive in encouraging you to achieve your goals.

What will happen during a one to one coaching session?

My one to one coaching sessions are carried out by Zoom (or any video conference tool), by phone, or face to face at a convenient time, date and place.

You will be guided through a 6-point process.

  1. Review the previous session and the actions that you completed
  2. Set the goal for that session
  3. Consider where you are at the present moment with this goal
  4. Consider your options in meeting this goal
  5. Agree on some actions
  6. Summarise the session

Each session will be for about an hour (sessions can be from 30 mins to two hours, depending on your preference). I will manage the timing of the session and ensure you gain full value from each session.

What does the coach need from me during a one to one session?

To make sure that your time with me is being well spent, you are expected to come to the session fully prepared and with a goal or aspiration in mind that you would like to work towards.

Preparation is very important for the coaching session. As such, you are encouraged to spend 15 minutes prior to the session in an environment where you will not be disturbed, so you’re feeling refreshed and relaxed prior to the start of the session.

You will also need to ensure that you have a pen and paper to hand and any other items that you may think will be useful, such as a diary.

What kind of goals do you help people with?

Since the agenda for each coaching session is defined by you and your needs, we can work towards your goals, whatever they happen to be.

These goals may relate to work, home, business, or community, and could cover a range of topics, perhaps including: time management planning, confidence, communication skills, raising your profile at work, raising the profile of your business, relationship building, team leadership etc.

As long as the area you want to explore is one you have some control over and you are willing to take action, the coaching sessions will be effective. Remember, you can only be coached on what you can do.

I have a particular passion for helping professional women balance multiple priorities across all areas of life. I work with them to improve confidence and resilience by focusing on key issues and challenging any limiting thinking.

Some examples of clients and their challenges include:

  • A busy investment executive – Coaching with me empowered her to create a better work/life balance alongside excelling in her role.
  • A stressed-out IT professional – By working together, she was able to reduce her stress levels by resolving conflict at home and at work.
  • A jaded small business owner – Our time together helped her to make genuine and authentic space for herself, so she could enjoy a richer, more fulfilling life.

I don’t know what my goals are – can coaching help?

Coaching with me can help you to identify and articulate your goals, both in terms of your long-term vision and immediate action-points. Each week, you will make progress that will take you towards your long-term aims.

I will help you focus on your most important area of concern, define what you want and determine what success and fulfilment looks like for you.

What do other people say about coaching with Sian Rowsell?

Read some testimonials from clients I’ve had the privilege of working with in the past.

How does one to one coaching work?

Different coaches use different models to structure their sessions. I will be asking you questions, listening to your responses, and challenging you where necessary.

Throughout our sessions, I will remain non-judgemental and will never offer you any direct advice. I will keep you moving forward towards your goal.

The timing, frequency and duration of coaching sessions is down to your preference. Most one to one clients initially contract for 3-6 months support (consisting of sessions lasting an hour every week).

Coaching sessions take place by video conference (such as Zoom), face-to-face, or by phone. Video sessions are popular with busy clients wishing to fit sessions around work or family commitments.

  • Do you feel that you aren’t reaching your potential right now and you’re simply not fulfilled?
  • Is there a gap between where you are now and where you want to be?
  • Do you sometimes feel you don’t have the skills, resources or confidence to get something complete?
  • Do you feel stuck, putting off making decisions or failing to stick to decisions you have made?
  • Are you ready to entertain new and fresh ideas?
  • Are you willing to be accountable for what you desire?

If you answer yes to any of these questions, then coaching can most definitely support you in being the best that you can be.

How does coaching differ from counselling, consulting or mentoring?

Unlike consulting or mentoring, where the consultant or mentor is an expert who gives advice based on their own experience, I will draw out wisdom already within you so that you may discover solutions for yourself. After all, you are the expert on your life.

Unlike therapy, I am not going to ask you to delve deeply into your past. You dictate the agenda – this means you don’t have to talk about anything you don’t want to talk about. You must, however, be willing to explore, think differently, and stretch yourself in order to achieve the results you desire.

Who else will know what has been said?

A coaching session is completely confidential. I agree and comply with the Coaching Code of Conduct and only in extreme circumstances will this confidence ever be breached (for example, if there’s evidence of intent to cause harm to yourself or others, or of criminal acts.)

A copy of the Code of Ethics that I operate under is provided to all clients at the start of their coaching journey.

I’ve been advised to take part in coaching – does that mean I’m doing something wrong?

Not at all. Being recommended for coaching at your place of work is a compliment. It is a sign you are on your way up and that you’re considered ‘high potential’ – it’s about fine-tuning the talents you already have.

Why do people hire a coach?

I will help you to get from where you are to where you want to be, quicker than you would alone. As your coach I can help you to identify your dreams and support you to take action to achieve your goals. I help my clients identify blockers, challenges and opportunities; I will ask key questions to unlock your potential.

Really being seen and heard by someone is very powerful and profound. It changed my life and it will change yours too. Having an intuitive coach to support you on a regular basis is empowering, inspiring and one of the best decisions you can make if you want to create more in your life and business.

I will challenge you to get out of your comfort zone, to grow and to accomplish your visions and goals. I am committed to your success and will encourage you to recognise and celebrate every accomplishment along the way.

I want to start coaching now – what do I do?

First, drop me a message via the contact form alternatively you can email me:

I’ll always aim to respond to your message within two working days – but if I’m honest, it’ll probably be less than that! After you’ve told me a little more about what you’re looking for, we’ll arrange a phone or video call to find out if I’m the right coach for you, and if you’re the right client for me.

On the discovery call, we’ll discuss your requirements in a little more depth. We’ll draw up a summary of your current situation, before exploring what you’d like to get out of the coaching experience and how we would go about achieving these goals.

We’ll answer any questions you may have and agree the frequency and timing of our sessions. I’ll give you a clear and thorough overview of what to expect, including payment information.

Following the call we’ll both sign our agreement with each other (a standard agreement can be found here), make sure we have dates in the diary, and you’ll pay your first invoice. From there, we’ll begin our journey to realising your full potential.
