What’s the thing behind the thing..?
…behind the thing..?
It’s fascinating working with my clients and finding out what is really holding them back. Often it’s not the thing or issue that they first mention. Through coaching we figure out what actually needs to be addressed. What’s the thing behind the thing..? (With credit to Brad Burton Now What? 2016.)
Digging deeper
For example it’s probably not motivation to get your profile out there that you’re struggling with. Perhaps you’re worried about getting your photograph taken. Digging deeper, maybe it’s childhood messages about not ‘blowing your own trumpet’..?
Maybe it’s not that you don’t know how to market your services. Maybe it’s that you don’t really know who you want to be working with..?
Peeling back the layers
Often the presenting issue is a smokescreen for what’s really going on. Just like when we have a headache, we’re better off treating the root cause (‘text neck’ or tension or …) rather than just the symptom (headache).
Similarly when some of my dancing couples have trouble with a figure in a routine (e.g. “we’re having trouble with the same foot lunge”), the problem is normally upstream. Something is going wrong just before where it is actually experienced.
My personal experience
I know it’s true for myself as well – I wrote recently about attending Cards on the Table and the impact it had (is still having) on me. Since I started working on the thing behind the thing, behind the thing… I just had a really successful month! Tiny steps are coming together and momentum is building…
