Goal Setting – time to be setting goals

December 7, 2016/by Sian Rowsell

Recently I wrote about it being time to do an annual review, it’s also a great time to be thinking about goal setting…

Goal setting for next year and beyond

It’s December…

– the calendar year is drawing to a close.

Everyone seems to be asking,

“Are you ready for Christmas?”

Eek!!

I’ve just done my last workshop of the year. I can count the number of working days left before the holidays. We’ve put up our Christmas decorations and we’re planning holiday activities. I’m enjoying mince pies (which I only recently discovered I like – perhaps they’re like olives!)

…and every networking meeting now seems to require a Christmas jumper! (I blame Colin Firth!)

It’s the perfect time of year to review and to (re)set goals…

Big Picture

When goal setting, do you get bogged down thinking about all the things you need to do?

Before thinking about (SMART) objectives or actions, let’s look at the big picture

– if everything was as you wanted it to be…
What would be happening?
What would you be hearing other people say?
What would you be saying to yourself?
What would you be feeling?
What are the benefits (for you and others)?

When you visualise having achieved this goal, how much detail can you add to the picture?

Thinking Big!

Is it a ‘Big Hairy Audacious Goal’?

– Or is it just +1 from where you are today (a few more clients, a bit more income, more of the same)?

Does it scare you a little (or a lot!) if you say it out loud?

– If not, what if you ’double it’ (whatever that means for you and your goal)?

Keeping it visible

Can you get it out of your head and onto paper? Despite hating Art at school, I love getting hands-on and drawing a mind map or creating a vision board.

Goal Setting

My vision board for 2016

How will you keep your goal/vision visible? – I keep my vision board in front of me at my desk. Perhaps you could have it on your screensaver, or as your background picture on your phone?

In my next post, I’ll be asking – what actions will you take to take you closer to your goals?

How do you set goals?

What about you? How do you capture your vision for the future?

Please let me know your thoughts by adding your comments below…

To find out how I can help you with goal setting, please get in touch via the contact form or call me on +44 7526 740486.

Best wishes!

Sian

Thanks Anna! Getting thoughts out of our heads and writing them down is a great habit! Sian
